Dear Rev. Ilyoung Will Kim and the congregation of First Korean UMC,

Blessings to you in the name of Jesus Christ.

As your district superintendent I want to first extend my deep gratitude to you for your willingness to engage in the discernment process. By participating in the discernment process you are committing to a time of deep listening for the Holy Spirit’s wisdom, insight, and calling. Through this process you will discover what path forward God envisions for your congregation, your mission, and ministry in your community. Thank you for walking through this process in the midst of a difficult season in the church.

The members of the cabinet, including myself, recognize the cultural, ethnic, and theological diversity that exists among our churches in Greater New Jersey. We are committed to work with every pastor and congregation in discerning where God is leading. This is imperative so that all may minister with integrity in the unique context of their congregation and in alignment with the beliefs and needs of their community. 

Now that you have officially requested to enter the discernment process, here are the next steps:

First, the congregation will need to send a $3,500 check made payable to GNJ for the administrative fees of the discernment process. Please send the check to the attention of Megan McKay at 205 Jumping Brook Road, Neptune, NJ 07753. The following steps of the process will only begin once the payment has been received.

Next, your congregation will be assigned two discernment guides. These will be two persons from around the conference who are trained in the discernment process. They may be clergy and/or laity. One will be an elder who will serve as your presiding elder for the special church conferences (see below); the other will serve as the spiritual guide for your discernment process.

The discernment process can involve anywhere from one to three special church conference sessions. Those sessions include:

• Session 1, scheduled for Saturday, October 15th at 3:30 pm – an overview of the process, review of the projected term sheet amount, prayerful conversation about why to stay or leave the United Methodist Church, and a preliminary vote on whether to continue the process. If a church votes not to continue in the process, they will receive a portion of the $3,500 as a refund.

• Session 2, scheduled for Saturday, October 22nd at 3:30 pm – prayerful conversation and discernment among the church members regarding reasons for disaffiliating or staying; another vote will occur.

• Session 3, schedule to be determined – Developing a connectional covenant between the congregation and GNJ about how disaffiliation will occur and how each will respect one another. 

Disaffiliating congregations that go through each of the above steps and work through the due diligence period will hold a special charge conference which will be convened to vote on the final term sheet (date to be determined).

Once we receive the $3,500 administrative fee you will be notified of and contacted by your assigned discernment guides. The administrative fee must be received before October 3, 2022, so that your official letter calling for the special sessions of the church conference can be sent by you to your congregation with the proper 10 days’ notice.

여러분의 감리사로서 저는 먼저 여러분의 자발적인 분변과정 참여에 깊은 감사를 드리고 싶습니다.  분변과정에 참여함으로써 여러분은 성령의 지혜와 통찰력 및 부르심에 대해 깊이 경청하는 시간에 헌신하게 됩니다.

이 과정을 통해 여러분은 여러분의 교회, 여러분의 사명, 그리고 여러분의 지역 사회에서의 사역을 위하여 어떤 길이 하나님이 앞으로 나아가는지를 발견할 것입니다.  교회에서 어려운 시기 중에 이 과정을 진행해 주셔서 감사합니다.

나를 포함하여 연회 지도부의 구성원들은 대 뉴저지 연회 내의 교회들에 존재하는 문화적, 인종적, 신학적 다양성을 인정합니다. 우리는 하나님이 인도하시는 분변이 되도록, 모든 목회자와 회중과 함께 일하기 위해 헌신하고 있습니다.

이것은 모든 사람이 자신들의 교회의 독특한 상황과 자신들 커뮤니티의 신념과 필요에 따라 성실하게 사역할 수 있도록 하기 위해 필수적입니다. 이제 여러분들이 공식적으로 분변 과정에 들어가도록 요청했으므로 다음 단계는 다음과 같습니다.

첫째, 교회는 분변 과정의 관리 수수료로 $3,500 수표를 GNJ에 보내야 합니다.

대한 예비 투표. 교회가 그 과정을 계속하지 않기로 투표하면, 그들은 $3,500의 일부를 환불받게

됩니다

• 세션 2

10월 22일 토요일 오후 6시 예정 - 변경 또는 체류 이유에 관한 교인들 간에 신앙적인

대화와 분변 후에 또 다른 투표가 있을 것입니다

• 세션 3

일정 결정 – 변경이 어떻게 진행되고 어떻게 상호 존중할지에 대해 교회와 GNJ 간의 연결 언약의 개발

위의 각 단계를 거치고 실사 기간을 거친 후에 교단을 변경하는 교회는 최종 조건표에 대한 투표를 위해 소집될 특별 임원회를 개최할 것입니다 (날짜는 미정). $3,500의 관리 수수료를 받으면, 지정된 분변 안내자가 여러분에게 통지되고 접촉하게 될 것입니다.

수수료는 2022년 10월 3일 이전에 수령해야, 교인 총회의 특별 세션을 요청하는 공식 서신을 10일간의 적절한 통지 기간을 가지도록 여러분의 교회에 보낼 수 있습니다.
